Glade Street YWCA

 

The Glade Street branch of the YWCA opened in 1942 and served as one of the premier fitness facilities in Winston-Salem until it's closing in 2010.  The Glade Street location currently houses the Administrative offices for the YWCA of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

Gateway Fitness Center

The Gateway Fitness Center was opened in 2007 and offers 90,000 square feet of climate controlled freedom to run, jump swim ,dance,  learn, lift and socialize. This facility offers a gymnasium with three full length basketball courts, a competition swimming pool, a family water park area, a full array of fitness classes, personal trainers and an indoor walking/running track.

This facility also offers a multi-purpose room, conference room and dance rooms for meetings and special events.

Best Choice Center

Located at 1031 Highland Avenue, the Best Choice Center is an academics-focused program for students who have the ability and desire to be academically successful. The Best Choice Center has earned exposure nationally recognizing excellence in helping children discover life outside of their neighborhoods. Academics are emphasized as means of rising above challenges surrounding their home lives. With the guidance of certified teachers, children at the Center explore the world of computers, civics, agriculture and world cultures. No child enrolled at the Best Choice Center has prior involvement with the juvenile justice system.  For more information call 336-722-0597.

 

The Hawley House

The Hawley House located at 841 West Street, is a women's substance abuse recovery facility that houses women diagnosed with the disease of addiction for a period of 9-12 months and offers 6 months of aftercare.  The house can accommodate up to 8 residents at a time and offers a nurturing environment to help these individuals rebuild their lives free from addiction.  For more information contact 721-0733.

 

The Historic Oak Grove School

The Historic Oak Grove School, located at 2637 Oak Grove Circle in Winston-Salem, was built in the early 1900's to educate black students in the surrounding communities.  This one room school house now serves as a museum exhibiting the furniture, fixtures and education related items found in the old school house.  Tours are provided by appointment only.  For more information on the Historic Oak Grove School call 336-722-5138 ext. 239
