The Collaborative for Strengthening Families & Neighborhoods!
This Collaborative, conceptualized by Dr. Shari Barkin of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, will improve children's health by providing minor medical services, teaching families skills to make better choices for their children, and bringing community groups together to work on children's health issues.

The vision: The Collaborative has service, educational, and research components. It provides minor medical services (i.e. blood pressure, BMI testing, peak flows for asthmatic children).

Families together: Bringing families into a family test kitchen where a group of 4 families can learn to prepare healthy meals together, then eat together. Other activities of the test kitchen include group support, education and interactive activities.

Parent leaders, block-by-block: Neighborhood peer parents serve as the “block parents” to provide hands-on help for other parents.

Health care providers together with families: Community volunteer doctors provide health education group sessions and assistance to families. This also educate health care providers to become agents and advocates for social change to sustain healthy neighborhoods.

Practical research development and effectiveness trials: Practical research ideas are generated to develop testable hypotheses that can promote stronger families and communities. Families are pre and post tested to determine changes in eating habits based on program participation
