Lifeguarding Classes

Upon completion and passing of the written and skills test you will receive a certifcation card for Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED which is good for 2 years.
The Gateway also offers CPR renewal classes for lifeguards who need their CPR updated. Participants need to bring their own rescue mask to the class. Held on Saturday mornings, It is a one day class that reviews CPR, tests your skills, and allows you to take the written test. Upon successful completion you will receive a current CPR certification.
- You must be 15 to take the course or turn 15 by the date of completion.
- Pass the pre-course swim test (requirements are listed below). MUST be completed before registering.
- Purchase books and rescue mask from the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org.
- Register and pay for the class before the first scheduled instructional day.
*Pre-course Swim tests will be held between the hours of 12 - 3 PM and 7 - 8:15 PM. The test consists of a 500 yard continuous swim, involving 100 yards breaststroke, 200 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing, and 200 yards the swimmer's choice, then 2 minutes of treading water with only your feet. Also, you must be able to retrieve a 10 lb. brick from a depth of 7 feet and swim back to the wall on your back using a kick only and then hop out of the pool. Upon passing the pre-course swim test, you will receive a card that will allow you to register at the front desk.
